As a school teacher, I was surprised when... I discovered that children really don't know how to write stories. Most of my students enjoy writing, but they don't seem to grasp the importance of using an appropriate title or having a beginning, middle and end.

One of the most important teaching aspects of the challenge is that the students are taught NOT to allow their hero to overcome with the first try-or even the first two tries!

• Students learn to write a proper beginning. - A good beginning includes getting to know the main character, as well as discovering his or her problem. Students learn what should go into a story beginning and what should not.

• Students learn to write a good middle. - A good middle includes the plot. The type of story that kids are encouraged to write shows a character attempting at least three ways to solve his or her problem-but without success. They are taught to write in ways that will cause the reader to care about their character and hope for his or her success.

• Students learn how to write a good ending. - The resolution to a story is one of the most important aspects. With this program, the students are encouraged to create happy endings that will leave readers feeling satisfied that the character they care about has overcome the challenges set before him or her.
